DEVELOPMENT
approx. 100 quilts by fiberart group TeXui
16, 17 and 18 March 2007, Patchwork & Quiltdagen, Rijswijk, NL
The exhibition of fiberart group TeXui* is dedicated to its members’ developments.
After having followed the SBA-course ‘Quilten Speciaal’ (2001-2) they decided to continue as a group in their search for more possibilities and exploration in depth of creating modern quilts. Although this newly taken course is fascinating, it is also worthwhile to follow back the path to the quilts with which they started.
For years the TeXui-members had been giving patchwork and quilting lessons before they threw themselves in this new adventure. Like most quilters, they had started quilting by making samplers, logcabins etc. In particular for this exhibition they searched for work from this earlier period, where craftsmanship and love for textile materials can be seen, and sometimes even the germs of later experimental work may be discovered.
Many quilts might still be recognized from previous Quiltersgilde exhibitions, but never have been connected with the present art quilters. Old and new side by side. And although for instance Tyvek, Colback and felt have been added to the range of materials, and although hot tool, soldering iron and punch machine are used next to the sewing machine, the basis of the original patchwork and quilting is most certainly still present.
The TeXui members are:
Bea Berends-van de Weijer, Rita Berghuis-Ensing, Cobi Brinkhuis-ten Broeke, Hanne Capel, Jelly Dijkstra, Marjon Hoftijzer-Boer, Annette Jeukens-Meijs, Mirjam Pet-Jacobs, Margo van Strien en Ineke van Unen- Wingelaar.
